Thanks for the Favourite... but I’ll take a Re-tweet

Feb 28, 2014

It’s always exciting to check Twitter and find your notifications icon glowing with that unmistakable Twitter Blue. Which one of my 140 character or less masterpieces has been selected for proliferation across the Twitterverse I wonder to myself, or maybe its a new follower, equally exciting! My finger anxiously touches down on the screen revealing…a Favourite.

Favourites bring mixed emotions for myself and many other users. The intended purpose of the favourite function is a place to store tweets that you will come back to later. Maybe you plan to repurpose an idea for a blog post or perhaps there is an article link that you do not have time to read at the moment, for these purposes and several others the Favourite function is an integral part of the Twitter experience.

As a tool for communicating your endorsement or appreciation of a particular tweet however, it is the about as useful as a floppy disk. Even the most novice social media users recognize that reciprocity is the name of the game. They are called social networks for a reason, spreading the content of others increases the likelihood that they will do the same for you. This is where Favourites do not work because while a re-tweet will be shared to the followers of the user, a Favourite will not, thus making it basically irrelevant in terms of expanding your reach to new users.

Facebook has to shoulder some of the blame for this misuse since many users are quick to equate it with the Like button and use it as such, but I don’t imagine Facebook will be going through any trouble to educate Twitter users anytime soon. Alas it looks as though we are destined to toil in a Twitterverse full of useless Favouriting for the foreseeable future. But all movements have humble beginnings, together we can make a stand! If you like found this through Twitter and you enjoyed the post, I would love a re-tweet.
